1981 Clark Gillies Team Canada Canada Cup - Photo Match - Video Match
Lot #171

This white mesh gamer by Sandow was worn by Hall of Famer Clark Gillies during the 1981 Canada Cup. Team Canada would finish 2nd to the arch-rival Russians in this epic battle of hockey talent. Gillies played an enormous role for Team Canada in the series, scoring twice and tallying 7 points in 7 games played.

Gillies was drafted 4th overall by the young New York Islanders franchise in the 1974 NHL Amatuer draft. Clark made the club after his first ever training camp and immediately made his presence felt on the ice. As a rookie, Gillies and his upstart Islanders would make their first ever playoff appearance. That year, the Islanders came from 3-0 down to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Quarter-Final round. In the Semi-Finals the Islanders would have to face the defending Stanley Cup champion Philadelphia Flyers and quickly found themselves behind again 3 games to none. As with the prior series the Islanders won the next 3 games and forced a game 7 on Spectrum Ice. The Cinderella story would come to an end that night, but not before Gillies and his teammates acquired a taste of success that would propel them to new heights in the years to come. During that epic Semi-Final series against the Flyers, Gillies served notice to the rest of the NHL that he was a force not to be reckoned with, as he pummeled the reigning NHL goon, Dave Schultz, in front of the Flyers faithful as game 5 neared its conclusion. So bad was the mauling that Schultz had to be rescued by not one, but two teammates, Andre Dupont and Ted Harris. So humiliating was the loss to Gillies that Schultz would never be the same and was soon after sent packing by the Flyers.

Gillies would be named team Captain in a vote by his teammates in 1977 after Ed Westfall stepped down from that role. He would easily be considered the best power forward of his generation. In an era where goalies and defense ruled, Gillies tabbed 6 different 30+ goal season from the Left Wing. He was twice a 1st team All Star, played in the NHL All Star game as well as international competitions such as the Challenge Cup and Canada Cup. Teaming with Hall of Fame linemates Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier, Gillies and the Islanders would go on to win 4 straight Stanley Cups. Gillies provided the ultimate protection to his teammates while diligently working the corners and crease. His epic battles with Terry O’Reilly in the 1980 playoffs may have been the spark that propelled the Islanders thru that hard fought series and onto their 1st Stanley Cup. As the Islanders made their run at a 5th straight Cup in 1984, Gillies put forth a Hall of Fame effort with a hattrick in game 2 of the Finals against Edmonton and a total of 12 goals and 19 playoff points that season.

This spectacular Team Canada sweater shows fine game use which consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, sweat stains and inner pilling. Worn by this hulking LW as he teamed with Islander linemates Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier to wreak havoc on the international world during the hard fought 1981 Canada Cup. This is the jersey that Gillies was wearing when he tied the deciding game at 1-1 with a 2nd period goal. Shown above are photo matches of Gillies wearing this exact jersey against the Russians in the Championship game. Also shown above is a video match of Gillies scoring the monumental goal against the Russians, in the Championship, which tied the game at 1-1 in the 2nd period. This is an awesome representation of a Hall of Famer whose jersey has proven very tough to acquire.
