Description
1979-80 Danny Gare Sabres Game Worn Jersey
Lot #8

This road blue knit gamer by Maska was worn by Danny Gare during the prime of his career. The 1979-80 season saw Gare lead the NHL in goals scored with 56. He broke onto the scene with a bang in what was Sabres fans favorite season of all time, 1974-75. The upstart Sabres made their first ever appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals that year, losing to the defending Cup champs, the Philadelphia Flyers. Danny was a key figure during that storybook season as he tallied 31 goals and 62 points as a rookie. He followed that season with a 50-goal campaign in 1975-76 and his path to stardom was assured.

Several years later the Sabres made Gare their team Captain, a title that he held for 5 seasons. Danny was never slow to drop the gloves, and despite his small 5’ 9” frame, he was the true definition of a power forward earning him respect from fans and teammates alike. Gare was a member of 2 different Canada Cup teams, 1976 and 1981 as well as 2 NHL All Star teams in 1980 and 1981. He was voted 2nd team NHL All Star during the 1979-80 season.

Following his 8 years in Buffalo, Gare was dealt to the Red Wings in a blockbuster deal, which included Jim Schoenfeld, Dale McCourt and Mike Foligno among others. His first full season in Detroit, 1982-83, saw Danny handed the prestigious Captain’s “C” of the Red Wings. He proudly held this title for all 4 of his full seasons in Detroit and will be remembered as the last man to wear the Captain’s “C” in Detroit before Steve Yzerman. Gare tallied 354 goals and 1285 PIMS during his 827 game career and will be fondly remembered by all who saw him play as a true competitor and one of the better forwards during his generation.

Sewn to the left breast of the gamer is the Captains “C”. Embroidered on both the front and back hem of this jersey is the tiny Maska logo. The game wear on this sweater is solid consisting of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, heavy inner pilling and by our count in excess of 40 team-sewn repairs. Sections of the sleeves have repairs sewn on top of repairs. The game wear on this sweater is a testament to the fierce competitor that Danny was.
