1978-79 Wayne Bianchin/1979-80 Nick Libett Penguins Game Worn Jersey
Lot #6

This road blue mesh gamer by Stall and Dean was last worn by Nick Libett during the 1979-80 NHL season. In 1978-79 this sweater was first worn by Wayne Bianchin. Bianchin spent 6 of his 7 years wearing the Penguins blue and white. He was claimed in the expansion draft by the Edmonton Oilers in 1979 as they entered the NHL and finished his career with them in 1979-80. Nick Libett played the first 12 years of a 14-year career with the Detroit Red Wings where he attained All Star status. He would join the Penguins in the summer of 1979 in a straight up deal for star center Peter Mahovlich and assumed the player number 14. In a career that spanned nearly 1000 games, Libett notched one 30-goal season and in excess of 500 career points.

This vintage blue and white gamer features the ever desirable, and yet so fragile, tackle twill crest, which in this case lost the war to wear and met constantly with the trainer’s needle and thread. In 1979-80 many of these 78-79 gamers were again used by the Pens who were noted recyclers. The team would wear these blue and white sweaters thru January of 1980 when the switch to the black and gold colored jerseys took place. Game wear is solid consisting of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner and outer pilling along with several other team sewn-repairs. Sewn in the collar are the Stall and Dean, wash, size and year tags.

These 30-year old blue Penguins gamers are so very desirable among hobbyists. Having been worn by the Penguins for only a couple of complete seasons in the late 1970’s, there remains little doubt why this style is in such high demand by collectors. Here’s a fine opportunity to acquire an example worn by an NHL All Star.
