Description
1978-79 Dave Schultz Penguins Game Worn Jersey
Lot #3

This home white mesh gamer by Stall and Dean was worn by Dave Schultz during the 1978-79 NHL season. Schultz is considered by many to be the # 1 all-time goon in NHL history. He played 8 NHL seasons, the first 4 with the Philadelphia Flyers where he won back to back Stanley Cup titles as a member of the “Broad Street Bullies” in the mid 1970’s. Unlike other pure goons, Dave did have some talent when he was allowed to play the game, as evidenced by his 20-goal output in 1973-74. “The Hammer’s” PIM totals during his 4 seasons in Philly read 259, 348, 472 and 307, wow.

After losing to the Canadiens in the 1976 Finals while trying for a 3rd straight Stanley Cup, Dave would move west to take up residence with the Kings in LA where he would play a full season and 8 games into the next. Early on in 1977-78 “The Hammer” was dealt back to Pennsylvania, this time to the Penguins. He would spend the remainder of 1977-78 and more than half a season in 1978-79 with the Pens before a deal sent him to Buffalo where he would complete his career. His 1977-78 PIM total reached 405, with 378 of them coming with the Penguins. All told Schultz would amass 2294 PIMs in a mere 535 games.

Worn by Schultz as he laid assault on the opposition during the 1978-79 NHL season, there is no surprise that this jersey shows solid game use. There are stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, washed out bloodstains, fine pilling both inside and out and a couple of team-sewn repairs. On the inside, the double garter style fight strap has also undergone some repair work. In addition, the desirable tackle twill crest has been repaired numerous times by the trainer’s needle and thread. Sewn in the collar are the Stall and Dean, wash, size and year tags. We can only imagine how many fights “The Hammer” had while wearing this very gamer.

These 30-year old Penguins blue and whites are so very desirable among hobbyists. Having been worn by the Penguins for only a couple of complete seasons in the late 1970’s there remains little doubt why this style is in such high demand by collectors. Further enticing is the fact that Schultz gamers have always been the clear cut # 1 prize among collectors of the pugilists, and relatively few Schultz gamers have survived the past 30+ years. It is with great pleasure that we bring to the hobby this newly discovered fresh game worn offering. For one lucky collector, the long search for your game worn grail is now over. Good luck!
