This road red dureen gamer by Wilson was worn by Yvan Cournoyer during the 1977-78 NHL season. The Roadrunner had an illustrious career spending all 16 of his seasons as a member of Les Habitants. Yvan became Montreal’s Team Captain upon the retirement of Henri Richard following the 1974-75 season. In all four of his seasons as team Captain, he guided his Canadien’s to a Stanley Cup championship, spanning 1975-76 thru 1978-79.
This was a team considered by many to be hockey’s greatest all-time dynasty. Cournoyer posted 428 career goals and was a member of 10 Stanley Cup winning squads in 16 years. His immense talent earned him four 2nd Team NHL All Star berths in addition to partaking in 6 NHL All Star games. He was an integral part of Team Canada’s 1972 Summit Series victory. In addition, Yvan was the 1973 Conn Smythe winner as the playoffs Most Valuable Player. Yvan was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame following the mandatory waiting period on his first ballot.
The 1977-78 season saw the Roadrunner score 24 goals and 53 points in 68 games played. Though the end of his career was near, Yvan turned on the jets using his still awesome speed as he struck for 7 goals and added 4 more assists in 15 playoff games en route to the Stanley Cup.
Sewn proudly to the left breast of this vintage gamer is the Captain’s “C”. Sewn to the inner hem is the chain stitched 77 year tag. Sewn between the shoulders is the all original nameplate, which is certainly a treat to collectors in the know. The game use on this striking road red dureen is heavy consisting of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, significant inner pilling, un-repaired holes and in excess of two-dozen team-sewn repairs. Shown above are two photo matches of Yvan wearing this exact jersey. The significant game use on this stunning dureen leaves no doubt that the Roadrunner spent plenty of time gliding up and down the wing in this glorious sweater. One of the prized jewels you could possess from the late 1970’s Montreal dynasty.
