1977-78 Larry Robinson Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey - Conn Smythe Trophy - All Star Season - 2nd Team NHL All Star - Photo Match
Lot #6

This red dureen gamer by Wilson was worn by Larry Robinson during the 1977-78 NHL season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Robinson in the 1st round of the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. Robinson enjoyed a 20-year NHL career and spent the first 17 of those seasons with Montreal, where he won an incredible 7 Stanley Cups. Larry was the 1978 Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP and also captured 2 Norris Trophies as the NHL’s best defenseman. Robinson was 6-times a 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star on defense and was a regular participant in the NHL All Star Game throughout his 2-decade long career, playing in a total of 10 annual classics.

Larry also starred when the international spotlight was on, playing for Team Canada in 4 different Canada Cups, while also taking part in those memorable New Year’s Eve Super Series contests against the Soviets during the Cold War era. He is considered one of the game’s all-time greats and was so recognized in the now revered ‘The Hockey News’ book that ranked the 50 greatest players in NHL history. Larry was honored as the 24th greatest player in NHL history in that publication. Following his playing days, Robinson added to his trophy case as he won the Stanley Cup as the New Jersey Devils head coach in 2000. In 1384 games played, Larry scored 208 goals and added 750 assists for a total of 958 points. His remarkable career also saw Larry partake in 227 playoff games where he added another 144 points.

Sewn to the inside hem of this gamer is the chain stitched “77” year tag. The game wear on this sweater is tremendous and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, havy inner pilling and about 20 vintage bullet style Montreal Canadiens team-sewn repairs! Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Robinson wearing this exact jersey during the still revered Montreal Canadiens dynasty. The old school blue and white striped garter style fight strap remains sewn to the inside beneath the back player numbers. The all-original nameplate is sewn to the upper verso and is a treat most certainly worthy of mention. “Big Bird’s” 1977-78 season was epic as he scored 65 points and went a staggering +71, made an All Star Game appearance, earned 2nd Team NHL All Star honors helping the Canadiens to their 3rd consecutive Stanley Cup and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in the process! This example is in fact the only dynasty era dureen of this legendary Hall of Famer that we know of to exist in the hobby. Further, the original nature of this jersey sets it in a class by itself as a true rarity and ranks it as perhaps the finest Larry Robinson jersey in our hobby. A hammered all-original photo matched example from the heart of Les Habitants Dynasty, choice!
