Description
1974-76 Gilles Meloche California Seals Game Worn Jersey - Gilles Meloche Letter
Lot #17

This jersey originates directly from the personal collection of Gilles Meloche. A copy of a letter of authenticity signed by Gilles Meloche will be included with your purchase.

This home white knit gamer by General Athletic and Gunzos was worn by Gilles Meloche circa the 1974-76 NHL seasons. Meloche began his NHL career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1970-71. The crowded goaltending situation led by Tony Esposito in the Windy City provided Meloche with little playing time which is why he welcomed the move to the Golden Seals for the start of the 1971-72 season. Gilles became the man between the pipes for the California franchise which would later relocate to Cleveland. In fact he would spend the next 7 years playing the lion’s share of the Seals and Barons games in goal. When the Barons folded following the 1977-78 season, Meloche joined the Minnesota North Stars. Gilles spent the next 7 seasons in goal for Minnesota. During that time he helped lead his team to the 1981 Stanley Cup Finals and played in 2 NHL All Star games. Meloche’s last stop was to the Steel City where he represented the Penguins for 3 seasons before announcing his retirement.

Sewn into the vented collar of this gamer are the frayed Gunzo’s, General Athletic and size tagging. The game wear on this vintage knit is solid consisting of plenty of stick and slash marks, puck marks, goal post paint transfer, inner pilling and more than a handful of team-sewn repairs. Also worthy of mention is the faint outline of a nameplate; a trait shared by nearly all of the mid 1970’s Seals gamers to ever enter our hobby. This 2-time NHL All Star goalie was the face of the California Golden Seals and Cleveland Barons franchise during the decade of the 1970’s. Offered here is a well worn mid 1970’s home gamer which enters our hobby directly from Gilles Meloche’s own personal collection, choice!
