This spectacular example originally hails from the personal collection of Glenn Chico Resch who our consignor purchased it from nearly 2 decades ago. Chico’s hand written letter which will be included with your purchase dates his own receipt of this gamer back to about 1980. In this 20 year old letter, Chico indicates based in part on the word of the party he received it from that this is likely a Rod Gilbert rookie jersey which may have also been worn by legendary Ranger Red Sullivan prior to Gilbert wearing it. Furthermore he discusses having brought it to show Lefty Reid at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto and Lefty “agreed that it was certainly from that era”.
Our own extensive research points to this wool having been worn by Jean Guy Gendron in 1961-62. Beyond this we can not say with certainty that any other player wore this jersey.
This home blue wool gamer by Cosby was worn by Jean Guy Gendron during the 1961-62 NHL season. Gendron partook in 14 NHL and 2 WHA seasons during a lengthy professional career which began in 1955 with the Rangers. During his NHL service he would represent the Rangers, Bruins, Canadiens and Flyers before 2 final seasons with Quebec in the WHA.
The condition of this nearly 50 year old sweater is simply remarkable, having been incredibly preserved over the past half century. Sewn in the hem is the Cosby and size tagging. Still laced through the eyelits is what we believe to be the original tie-down lace. Game use is beautiful on this ancient wool with about 30 team-sewn repairs which are evenly distributed throughout the body and sleeves of this historic gamer. There are a few very small un-repaired holes and of course fantastic interior pilling. This is a tremendous example of an Original 6 wool which will surely enhance any old school collection of gamers.
